Orleans Snaps Streak, Shuts Out Falmouth

June 26, 2008

Falmouth, Mass. It’s been eight days since the Cardinals last won a game but they changed their fortunes Thursday night with a 2-0 victory over Falmouth.  It improved the Cardinals record to 4-5 overall.

C Hampton Tignor (Florida) gunned down three Commodores on the base-paths and caught all nine innings of the shutout.  He also did not allow a passed ball and kept the pitching staff from throwing a wild pitch in the game.

Orleans jumped out to an early lead in the third.  OF Gary Brown (CS Fullerton) led the inning off with a nice bunt single on the right side.  With Brown on the move, 2B Matt Bowman (Nevada) lined a pitch up the middle that fell for a base hit and advanced the runner to third.  SS Cole Figueroa (Florida) hit into a 4-6-3 double play but it scored Brown to give the Cards the 1-0 lead.

A two-out rally in the fifth put the Cardinals on the board again.  Bowman beat out an infield single to third and Figueroa walked to put two on for OF Tim Wheeler (Sacramento St.) with two away.  Wheeler lined a pitch deep to right field.  It bounced off the fence as Bowman came around to score.  Figueroa was thrown out at the plate but the Cardinals did their damage and extended their lead to 2-0.

That was when the pitching staff of the Cardinals really started to lock in.  RHP Martin Viramontes (Loyola Marymount) started the game and pitched four scoreless innings allowing just three hits and striking out four.  Viramontes faced the bases loaded with one down in the fourth but made a couple of clutch pitches and pitched his way out of the jam after inducing a short fly ball and striking out Falmouth OF Ryan Jones (Wichita State).

RHP Matt Thomson (San Diego) was splendid in relief as he did not allow a hit in four shutout innings.  He faced the minimum amount of hitters as the only two Commodores to reach base against him came on a hit by pitch in the fifth and a walk in the sixth.  Tignor gunned down OF A.J. Pollock (Notre Dame) in the fifth and Thomson began a 1-6-3 double play to retire both runners.

The Cardinals’ closer RHP Kyle Kamppi (Georgia Southern) allowed two hits to begin the ninth but shut the door on the Commodores with a couple of strikeouts and picked up his third save of the year.

The two Orleans catchers, Tignor and C Travis Tartamella (Pepperdine) have kept an incredible pace throwing out base-runners.  Tignor has now thrown out runners on seven of eight stolen base attempts, good for an 87.5% caught stealing percentage.  Tartamella has been impressive in his own right, gunning down six of nine base-stealing threats (66.7%).

The shutout win is the first shutout tossed by the Cardinals pitching staff this year.  Last season they shut out their opponents a remarkable seven times.  The win also snaps a four game losing streak for the Cardinals that began on June 20th against Hyannis.  They’ll have a rematch with the Mets tonight at Eldredge Park at 7:00pm EDT.
