Orleans, Mass. - Andrew Gagnon (Long Beach St.) struck out eight over seven innings and the Brewster Whitecaps scored four runs in the first two innings to hand the Orleans Firebirds their third straight loss, 6-2, Saturday night at Stony Brook Field in Brewster.

Gagnon, who struck out nine in a seven-inning complete game on Sunday, was equally impressive on this night. After allowing four hits through the first three innings, he allowed just one hit, a fourth inning single, and retired the final ten batters he faced to pick up his third win (3-0) of the summer.

Offensively, the Whitecaps gave their pitcher an early lead with two runs in each of their first two at-bats. Danny Oh (Cal-Berkeley) drew a one-out walk in the first and scored on Andy Burns' (Kentucky) RBI triple to right center field. Troy Channing (Saint Mary's) followed with a fly ball to left and Matt Newman's (Arizona St.) throw to the plate took an irregular bounce over catcher Matt Koch's (Loyola Marymount) head, allowing Burns to score.

Brewster doubled its lead in the second against Orleans starter Martin Viramontes (Loyola Marymount). Viramontes walked the leadoff batter Taylor Ard (Mt. Hood CC) and then allowed three straight one-out singles that plated Brewster's third run. A bases-loaded walk to Burns made it 4-0. MunoK

Orleans finally got on the board in third inning despite compiling three hits in the first two innings. Kevin Muno (San Diego) (pictured right) took advantage of a 2-0 pitch and crushed it over the left field fence for a solo home run. That was it for the Firebirds until the a ninth inning rally brought the tying run to the plate.

Facing former Firebird and Brewster closer Tommy Kahnle (Lynn), Preston Tucker (Florida) drew a one-out walk and Jayce Boyd (Florida St.), Newman and Koch hit consecutive singles to score a run and bring up Joe Loftus (Vanderbilt) with the bases loaded. Brewster countered with Colton Murray (Kansas) and the righthander got a 4-6-3 game-ending double play on the first pitch he threw.

After allowing just one unearned run and four walks in his first two starts spanning ten innings, Viramontes (1-1) walked five and gave up four runs in 4 1/3 innings. Elliot Glynn (UConn) allowed the final two runs in an inning and a third relief appearance and Burny Mitchem (Dayton) and John Brebbia (Elon) combined for 2.1 innings of scoreless relief to finish the game.

Burns was the offensive star for the Whitecaps as he finished 2-2 with two walks, a run and three RBI. Kirk Singer (Long Beach St.) and John Berti (Bowling Green), the 8-9 hitters, combined to go 4-8 with three runs scored and Drew Martinez (Memphis) picked up two hits to raise his league-leading average to .403. Newman had three hits for Orleans and six other Firebirds collected single hits on the night.

The Firebirds are now 7-11 and tied with Harwich for fourth in the East Division. Orleans hosts Chatham in a July 4th matchup starting at 7 p.m. Brewster remains tied for first with Y-D at 13-5 and travels to Harwich for a 5:30 p.m. start on July 4th.
