Orleans Falls to Chatham 1-0 for Weekend Split
July 5, 2009
By Tyler Maland

Orleans, Mass.
– On Saturday night, the Orleans Firebirds traveled to Chatham,
dealt the first-place Anglers a 1-0 loss, and moved within two points –
one win – of the top spot in the Eastern Division. The Firebirds
hosted the Anglers on Sunday night, and this time it was Chatham that
walked away with a 1-0 win and maintained its lead in the
standings. A sixth inning sacrifice fly by Parker Bangs
(South Carolina) was all Chatham needed, as starter Tyler Lyons
(Oklahoma State) pitched seven shutout innings for the win.
The loss moves Orleans to 9-8, while Chatham snapped a two
game losing streak and is now 11-7. Orleans will travel to Bourne
for a 6:00 pm contest on Monday evening, while Chatham will host
Harwich at 7:00 pm.
Chatham manufactured its only run of the game in the sixth
inning, when right fielder Whit Merrifield (South Carolina) led
off the inning with an infield single, moved to second base on a
sacrifice bunt, stole third, and scored on Bangs’s sac fly.
That was the only damage done to Firebirds starter Elliot
Glynn (Connecticut), who pitched 6.1 strong innings, allowing only
four hits and one run while walking three and striking out four.
Glynn (1-1) picked up his first loss. The run he gave up in the
sixth inning was only the second he has allowed in three starts this
season.
The Firebirds thought they had tied the game 1-1 in the
seventh inning, when designated hitter Alex Hassan (Duke) hit a
shot down the left field line that was called a home run by the third
base umpire before being overruled and called foul by the home plate
umpire.
Orleans threatened again in the eighth inning, putting the
tying run in scoring position after right fielder Steve Selsky
(Arizona) singled and stole second base. But Chatham reliever
Taylor Hill (Vanderbilt) struck out Firebirds
centerfielder Gary Brown (CS Fullerton) with two outs and two
men on to preserve the shutout.
Lyons improves to 1-1 on the season. He gave up just two
hits and walked none, striking out one hitter. Just one Firebirds
player reached second base while Lyons was on the mound.
