Gary Brown is Coca Cola Player of the Week
July 20, 2009
Orleans, Mass.
- In the pitching-heavy Cape Cod Baseball League, nine runs would have been a feasible amount for the Orleans Firebirds to score in a week. Instead, leadoff hitter Gary Brown (CS Fullerton) scored nine on his own, igniting the Orleans offense and earning Coca Cola Player of the Week honors for the week of July 12th to 18th.
The Orleans centerfielder hit at an extraordinary .444 clip throughout the week, going 12-for-27 with two doubles, a triple, two home runs, and seven RBI, with a .515 on base percentage and a .815 slugging percentage – all, again, out of the leadoff spot. He was electrifying on the base paths, not only with steals (eight on the season) but also taking extra bases from sleeping defenders with regularity.
Brown’s week was highlighted with a 4-for-5 performance in a 10-2 win July 17th at Harwich. He had two doubles, three RBI, two runs, a stolen base, and also added an outfield assist throwing a runner out at third from centerfield.
Brown is now second in the league in hitting (.366), fourth in slugging (.500), and tied for fourth in runs (21) despite missing eleven games after coming late from the College World Series. He hit .340 with 23 steals this year for Cal State Fullerton.
