Ten Scoreless Innings Lead to 0-0 Tie
July 22, 2008

Brewster, Mass. Each team received 30 outs but it wasn’t enough for either team to score. The Orleans Cardinals and Brewster Whitecaps ended a 10-inning game in a scoreless tie after the contest was called due to darkness.
The teams combined for just 11 hits and no errors. Unlike most games between the two teams this year, tonights was very well played on both sides with a lot of quality pitching and defense.
RHP Brad Stillings (Kent State) made his first start of the season for the Cards after appearing in six games out of the bullpen. He looked quite natural it was his first start since the spring season at Kent State and tossed five shutout frames, striking out four.
He was relieved in the sixth by LHP Justin Earls (Georgia). After a 1-2-3 inning by Earls that brought his season ERA down to 0.69, RHP Matt Thomson (San Diego) entered the game. Thomson will be the starting pitcher for the Eastern Division team in the All-Star Game on Saturday and had started the Cardinals game on Friday at Yarmouth-Dennis but was available out of the bullpen with all of the upcoming off days for Orleans.
Thomson turned out two perfect innings and struck out three. He handed the ball over to LHP Adam Wilk (Long Beach St.) who continued to limit the Whitecaps offensively. Wilk walked one and allowed a hit but kept the shutout in tact and struck out three.
The Cardinals picked up four hits tonight from four different sources. 2B Matt Bowman, SS Kyle Spraker (Loyola Marymount) and PH Shaun Kort (Nevada) all singled while OF Alex Hassan (Duke) doubled and was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple.
Neither team had a runner reach third until the top of the tenth when the Cardinals loaded the bases with two outs. OF Tim Wheeler (Sacramento St.) grounded out to end the threat.
Wheeler’s 0-for-4 performance snapped a seven-game hit streak that he had pieced together. It follows a 10-game streak that he had earlier in the season.
Brewster did not have a runner reach third throughout the entire 10-inning contest.
The Cardinals will benefit from their first scheduled off day since June 25th tomorrow. They will be back in action on Thursday, July 24th at Wareham. The game time has been changed to 5:00pm EDT. It was originally scheduled to be played at 7:00pm. The game will not be broadcast on the Cardinals Radio Network due to broadcasting restrictions but a live stats feed will be available.
