Orleans, Mass. - Jorge Reyes (Oregon St.) spun a magnificent one-hitter in eight innings pitched Sunday night, and was finally rewarded with his first win of the summer. Reyes retired the first 16 batters of the game before his perfect game and no-hit bids were broken up in the sixth inning. He struck out nine and walked two, allowing just two base-runners and one unearned run in a 3-1 win over Harwich.

Reyes entered Sunday’s game with a 0.87 ERA in three starts, but nothing to show for it but an 0-2 record. He had received just three runs of support in his last two starts combined.

On Sunday, the 6’2” righthander did all he could to keep his opponent off the board, and the Orleans offense provided three runs that were enough for the win.

Reyes tore through the Harwich lineup, painting the outside of the plate and coming in on the hands, working quickly and getting ahead of hitters with consistency. Of the 16 straight outs he got to start the game, six were strikeouts, six fly or pop-outs, and four ground-outs.

The Warden, Washington native finally allowed a runner to reach base with one out in the sixth inning when he hit Harwich designated hitter Anthony Sosnoskie (Virginia Tech) with a pitch. The next batter, Levi Michael (UNC), broke up the no-no with a single through the right side. Sosnoskie came around to score Harwich’s only run of the game two batters later on a fielding error that should have ended the inning.

The Firebirds bats responded in the bottom of the sixth as if to ensure Reyes that another one of his stellar starts wouldn’t be spoiled. With runners on second and third, Michael Olt (Connecticut) tied the game with a sacrifice fly before Kevin Muno (San Diego) hit a two-out RBI single to score the go-ahead run.

It was the second straight day that Muno batted in the go-ahead run in a tight ball game. The left fielder went 3-for-4, and is 4-for-8 with three RBI in his last two games.

Riccio Torrez (Arizona St.) added Orleans’s insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning with a solo blast well over the left field fence, his second of the season. Torrez started the day batting .364 in 11 games, and went 2-for-2 with two walks.

Alex Hassan (Duke) had a double and a run for Orleans, and pitched the ninth for his second save in as many days.

Reyes, who struck out 11 in his last outing, a 2-1 loss to Y-D, now has 32 strikeouts in 28.2 innings pitched. With Sunday’s performance, his ERA dropped to 0.64.

The Orleans pitching performance took the focus away from a solid start from Harwich’s Aaron Meade (Missouri St.), who went 5.2 innings and gave up one earned run. Chase Reid (Vanderbilt) got the loss and gave up two earned runs in 1.2 innings of relief.

Orleans improves to 19-15-1, and remains in second place in the East. The Firebirds have a day off Monday, and will be back in action Tuesday for a 5:00 p.m. game at Brewster. Harwich, now 14-19, will travel to Falmouth Monday night for a 7:00 p.m. game.
